Counseling is not only for people with mental illness. Each one of us, in our lives goes through situations that cause stress and disturbance to our mental stature. Some of us have strong coping mechanisms like good family support, community support, faith, religion etc. Some of us in spite of all this are unable to come out of the stressful mental states causing disturbance to our mental and physical equilibrium. The cause of stress and feeling of helplessness is due to the difficulty in defining the problem and the wrong measures to fix it.
-
We in counseling help you see the problem in a different light and make you aware of the alternative choices available in managing the problem.
-
We teach skills you will be able to carry with yourself outside the therapy room and be able to practice on your own.
-
We partner with the clients and we facilitate the change by using different therapeutic skills like cognitive behavioral approach, experiential therapy, choice theory, mindfulness , art and play therapy for younger clients, family therapy and marital and couples counseling depending on the needs of clients and nature of the problem.
By using these evidence based approaches, we are able to help the clients gain insight about themselves and their situations and help them with techniques to manage themselves and their situations in life without the future need of the therapist. Typically the sessions are for 50 minutes, and range for 6-12 weeks using brief therapy techniques. Some issues might take longer to handle depending on the client and type of problem.
